Mental Health Emergencies
Sexual Assault
Medical attention is vital, as you may have injuries of which you are unaware. It is important to seek medical care ASAP at a facility where the staff is specially trained to provide care for sexual assault survivors to:
- Be examined and treated for any injuries and be tested and treated for exposure to sexually transmitted diseases
- Discuss ways to reduce the risk of pregnancy; including emergency contraception (morning after pill)
- Collect medical evidence
The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) ER has a team of specially trained on call 24/7 to care for female and male victims of sexual assault. You have the right to a free medical/forensic exam at MUSC for up to 120 hours (or 5 days) after an assault whether you chose to file an official incident report or report anonymously.
Remember, the assault was NOT your fault. There are people who will believe you and support you as you decide what to do. We strongly encourage you to contact the Office of Victim Services (voluntary assistance program for students affected by violent crime).
- The only phone number for OVS (Office of Victim Services) is 843.953.2273.
- Please reserve calling after business hours for victimizations that occurred within the past 120 hours/five days. Thank you.
