Over the counter cold/ allergy medicines

Sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes

Use antihistamines, such as Allegra, Zyrtec, or Claritin.

Stuffy nose, sinus congestion and pressure

Use a decongestant, such as pseudoephedrine. Pseudoephedrine is kept behind the counter at the pharmacy. You do not need a prescription, but you must show an ID and be 18 years or older to purchase it.

Chest congestion

Use an expectorant, such as Mucinex. Mucinex contains guaifenesin which is the same ingredient in Robitussin cough syrup. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant which is found in combination with guaifenesin in Mucinex DM and Robitussin DM

Many combination medicines are available, but make sure you are not duplicating ingredients.

For chest and sinus congestion: you can use Mucinex-D
(guaifenesin with pseudoephedrine)

For runny nose with sinus congestion:
Allegra D, Zyrtec D, and Claritin D also have pseudoephedrine already added
